NOTE: I (Claire) currently only offer developmental editing for fiction, because that’s my favorite.
What’s a developmental edit? There are a lot of terms for each stage of the editing process, and the truth is that no two editors offer the same thing.
A developmental edit from me includes:
A deep dive into your manuscript to sleuth out the heart of your story and make it shine
Highly detailed in-manuscript comments on plot, character, theme, pace, tone, tension, genre expectations, marketability, and other story-focused elements.
Specific suggestions for whatever problems, inconsistencies, etc. may arise.
A 1- to 2-page write-up of the main concerns and suggestions to give you a clear path forward.
Email correspondence to answer any follow-up questions (if you want to jump on a Skype call instead, that’s fine, too).
A developmental edit from me does not include:
Rate: $0.03-0.045/wd - varies based on manuscript’s needs.
Availability: I only have room for 1-2 clients a month, so be sure to plan ahead.
Currently accepting manuscripts for:
September (1 slot)
October (1 slot)
November (2 slots)

Reserving your spot: Email me, Claire Taylor, at email@example.com with 1) your name, 2) title of manuscript, 3) manuscript genre, 4) approximate word count, 5) number of published works (it’s okay if that’s zero!), 6) desired month for the edit, and 7) the first 1,000 words of your manuscript attached as a .doc or .docx file.
Please note: A non-refundable deposit of $500 is required to reserve your spot.
More about me:
I’ve professionally edited over 200 manuscripts since I started doing this in 2012.
While every genre has its own tropes, what makes a great story is fairly universal. For that reason, I love editing across genres. Sci-fi? Let’s do it. Mystery? Yes, please! Humor? You’ve come to the right place. LitRPG? Leerooooy…!
I’ve edited a lot of romance. Erotica, second-chance, sweet cowboy, space aliens, rom-com—you name it, I’ve edited it.
Since graduating summa cum laude with a BA in English, I’ve worked as an in-house editor for a small publishing company and taught middle school and high school English Lit and filmmaking. Now I’m a full-time writer with just over 20 published novels across my pen names. I offer editing and Story Alignments on the side because I get a thrill out of helping other authors feel confident in their stories.
I’m an avid reader and am thrilled to be living in the golden age of television. I truly believe stories are the most powerful tools we have for change and healing, and I want to help as many people as possible tell the stories that others need to read.
Favorite books: The Princess Bride, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, East of Eden, Harry Potter, The Cormoran Strike novels, Wuthering Heights, the His Dark Materials series, and anything by Kurt Vonnegut.
